The Salvation Alley String Band will be playing a whole bunch of shows in the next few weeks. We will be at the Emily Williston Library in Easthampton on Tuesday, August 24 at 6pm to play a brief acoustic set. On Saturday, August 28, we’ll be in Granby for the Red Fire Farm Tomato Festival at 1pm, and then will be at Mocha Maya’s in Shelburne Falls at 8pm. On the following Thursday, September 2, we’re holding our cd release show at the Silk City Tap Room in Florence. As always, details can be found on the navigation bar to the right, and on our shows page.

Black Moon Recap

Belchertown, Massachusetts. The town was built on a booming carriage manufacturing trade throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, and began attracting summer tourists from the Boston area to its beautiful rural setting in the 1800's. Belchertown expanded in 1938 to include parts of Enfield when Enfield was flooded to create the Quabbin Reservoir. It still has one of the nicest town commons in the area. In the midst of all this beauty lies the Black Moon Cafe, hidden behind a Dunkin Donuts and a Planet gas station.

The Black Moon is a nice room to hear music. I've been there a few times with the Rub Wrongways Caravan of Stars, and have always been impressed with how things sound. The PA is behind the stage, so it's important to take a few minutes to make sure everything sounds good. Fortunately, our drummer Matt Jugenheimer was able to get levels on the mics and acoustic instruments while the rest of us set up amps and such. We also mic'ed up the Black Moon's upright piano, by far my favorite part of playing there. MORE CLUBS SHOULD HAVE PIANOS. There, I said it.

We played about 12 songs, give or take. I don't remember exactly, because we cut a few and added a few when we learned our organist/singer Ella Longpre couldn't make the show due to illness. Jason and I traded off between banjo, 12-string acoustic guitar, and electric guitar on a few songs. People danced. Matt Silberstein played some incredible leads on his mandolin.

Then, the Lonesome Brothers took the stage, and blew everyone away. Anytime Andy and I see the Lonesome Brothers, we give each other looks of envy/amazement/disbelief every few minutes. They're just such an incredible band.

If you haven't been to the Black Moon Cafe, this is the time to start. It's a great room with a good PA, comfortable seating, a piano, reasonably-priced drinks, plus you get to see two great bands for $5.

Mastering Done!

Good news! Mastering is done on our album, “The Salvation Alley String Band Presents: ‘The Pioneer Valley Rose’ And Other Favorites”. We worked with Carl Saff Mastering in Chicago. Carl made Justin Pizzoferrato’s mixes sound even better. You can feel the upright bass in your gut, just the way God intended.

We can’t wait to unleash this album on an indifferent world. Up next: album art!
